Gloria Swanson "Norma Desmond" silk embroidered Asian evening jacket from Sunset Boulevard. (Paramount, 1950) Academy award winning costume designer Edith Head created this form-fitting, embroidered silk evening jacket for Gloria Swanson as the former silent movie queen Norma Desmond. The jacket features an elegant Asian flower motif embroidered in silver and gold on black, and is cinched at the waist with slightly flared peplum. Completely lined in lightweight yellow silk, the jacket has an integral Paramount label sewn into the collar which is handwritten "Gloria Swanson". Swanson wears this jacket in the film's key scene where Norma is intently watching actual silent footage of herself (from director Erich Von Stronheim's real-life silent Swanson vehicle Queen Kelly). When the camera pauses on a close-up of her face, she jumps up from her seat, leaps into the midst of the projector's blinding light, and with her left arm raised, defiantly declares "we didn't need dialogue, we had faces!" William Holden is also in the shot, along with a brilliant shaft of light illuminating Gloria's face and featuring an exquisite full-frontal view of this magnificent jacket. This film received eleven Academy Award nominations, including Swanson as Best Actress, and won three. Original garments from this film are quite rare, and this wonderful jacket, designed by Edith Head and worn by Swanson in one of her most accomplished roles, is especially desirable.
