Description

Star Wars: Episode IV - A New Hope (TCF, 1977), X-Wing Pilot Display Costume Handcrafted by Andrew Ainsworth. Rebel X-Wing pilot display costume handcrafted by Andrew Ainsworth, known for manufacturing the original Stormtroopers and Imperial and Rebel pilot helmets for Star Wars: Episode IV - A New Hope. This bespoke costume includes (1) pair of boots, (1) pair of gloves, (1) white vest, (1) orange jumpsuit, (1) oxygen regulator, (3) sets of straps, (1) bag of large metal cylinders, (1) helmet, and (1) 3-piece stand for helmet display. In 1976, Ainsworth collaborated with Production Designer John Mollo on the development of both Imperial and Rebel Alliance helmets, with Mollo's sketchpad entry from January 27, 1976, referring to Ainsworth as "Ains." Ainsworth's neighbor, Nick Pemberton, initially contracted him for the project, tasking him with the three-dimensional plastic work, while Pemberton handled the costume's textile components for the costume. Drawing inspiration from the distinctive top ridge of Roman Centurion helmets, Ainsworth initially designed the pilot helmets with a full visor intended to display information to the pilots in mid-flight. However, after creating 40 vacuum-formed versions, it became clear that the design needed to allow for the actors' faces to be visible, leading to the development of the iconic yellow visor. Ainsworth and Pemberton collaborated closely on the costume, with Pemberton supplying the orange boiler suit and Soviet-era military boots. Ainsworth added a vacuum-formed control panel on the chest complete with custom-made "greeblies". This display costume is a precise replica of the original, incorporating the helmet design from the initial molds, faithfully recreating the iconic look that has become a staple of the Star Wars universe. Exhibits display wear.
