Description

Star Wars: Episode IV - A New Hope (TCF, 1977), Tusken Raider Display Costume Handcrafted by Andrew Ainsworth. Tusken Raider (Sandperson) display costume, meticulously recreated by Andrew Ainsworth, the original Stormtrooper maker, offers an impeccable reproduction that closely mirrors the original, distinguished only by its pristine condition. Rooted in the original sketches by ILM's production designer John Mollo, Nick Pemberton and Ainsworth were tasked with bringing the concept to life. Pemberton handled the garment elements, while Ainsworth took on the intricate task of crafting the helmet. The creation process involved constructing the initial six helmets from fiberglass, to which Ainsworth added hand-filed aluminum components, crafted using a lathe. Following this, Ainsworth and Pemberton adorned the helmets with their characteristic chaotic bandages, ensuring the six original costumes were completed and dispatched to Tunisia in time for the desert filming in March 1976. The costume ensemble includes boots, a utility belt, a waist accessory, five pieces of clothing crafted from linen and woven fabrics, gloves, a helmet, and a gaffe stick/weapon made of fiberglass. Ainsworth notes that this costume represents the sole reproduction he has ever undertaken, attributed to the intricate metalwork that demanded an extraordinary level of detail and precision. Despite being designed for display, the costume shows minimal wear, with slight alterations such as small slits in one boot and glove to facilitate weapon display.
