Star Wars: Episode IV - A New Hope (TCF, 1977), "Low Altitude" Panel of the Death Star Surface. Vintage original panel from Star Wars: Episode IV - A New Hope, used in the Death Star attack sequence. Created by the artisans at Industrial Light and Magic of rigid polyfoam with cast resin accents painted in varying shades of gray. Screen-used in the low altitude shots of the Death Star surface, this panel measures 11.75" x 11.75" x 3.9". Panels like this one were set up in the ILM parking lot to film aerial shots using the Dykstraflex camera. To simulate the velocity of the Rebel assault, the film crew affixed a camera to their vehicle and filmed as they drove alongside the panels. Additional shades of gray and distressing effects have been added to convey the worn look of the Death Star's iconic appearance. The verso partially reads, "[Or]iginal / Design / [Sta]r- Wars - / [Lu]cas Ranch, Ca. 1975". Panel exhibits minor fading, cracking, and studio-distressing.
