Two Years Before the Mast Scripts. Based on the classic book by Richard Henry Dana Jr., Two Years Before the Mast was one of Paramount's big hits of 1946, an epic melodrama of brutality on the sea, staring Alan Ladd, Brian Donlevy, and Howard Da Silva (the last a standout as the sadistic captain). This lot includes the original 331-page script, dated September 1, 1939, written by George Bruce, originally intended for filming by Edward Small Productions, and including a document signed by Bruce that he authored the screenplay; a handwritten 47-page revision by Thomas Job, dated December 3, 1942 and including a signed document by Job that he wrote the treatment; a revised 199-page screenplay, dated December 3, 1943, by Seton I. Miller (noting "based on a Screenplay by George Bruce"), with penciled notation on cover "Starring Alan Ladd"; and Paramount's release dialogue script, dated December 19, 1944. Although filmed in 1944, Two Years Before the Mast was released in 1946, held up by Paramount to cash in on what the studio correctly predicted to be a big post-war box office. Miller, who received the major screen credit, had won an Oscar for Here Comes Mr. Jordan (1941). All material in Very Good condition.
