Description

The Treasure of the Sierra Madre Script by John Huston (Warner Bros., 1948). Vintage original bound and bradded, 141-page carbon copy typed screenplay with interior title page reading, "THE TREASURE OF THE SIERRA MADRE' Script By John Huston From The Novel By B. Traven" and dated, August 17, 1946" including approx. 29-blue revision pages, some dated "8/20/46" and some "8/21/46." Having read Travern's novel a decade earlier, Huston had always wanted to adapt the story to film. Humphrey Bogart caught wind of the planned production and campaigned heavily for the part of "Dobbs" which he won.

Like many artists of the era, John Huston had to negotiate the scrutiny of the Hayes office and their strict code. An example of a change from the line in the novel: "Badges, to god-damned hell with badges! We have no badges. I don't have to show you any stinking badges, you god-damned carbon and chinga tu madre!" was changed to accommodate Hayes:

DOBBS:
All right. If you're the police, where are your badges?

GOLD HAT:
Badges? We got no badges. We don't need badges. I don't have to show you any stinking badges.

Which would make its way into the history books and reappear as, "We don't need no stinking badges" in other movies and pop culture up to today. Exhibiting age and handling. In vintage Very Good condition. Comes with a COA from Heritage Auctions.
