Description

The Sniper (Columbia, 1952), Stanley Kramer Personal Book-Bound Script. Vintage original 116-page revised final draft screenplay by Harry Brown, from Edna and Edward Anhalt's story. Dated September 4, 1951 with a single yellow correction page, and corrected lead characters page, each dated September 18, 1951. Produced by Stanley Kramer, directed by Edward Dmytryk, starring Arthur Franz, Adolphe Menjou, Marie Windsor and Richard Kiley. Like so many prior Kramer associates, Dmytryk was called before the HUAC hearings, and upon refusing to name names, was imprisoned for a period of time before relenting. As rumored punishment for his political "crimes", with this as his first directing job since being blacklisted, Dmytryk was tasked to work with Adolphe Menjou, arguably the single most virulent, outspoken commie-bashing, voluntary witness at the HUAC hearings. Of an interesting personal note, this is the first time fledgling actress Karen Sharpe (later to become Mrs. Stanley Kramer) would work on one of his films, but it's said they never physically crossed paths until later. The present script was custom-bound for producer Stanley Kramer's personal library in green leatherette with title stamped in gilt on the front board and spine. Vintage original 8" x 10" gelatin silver portrait photo of the the titular character "Edward Miller" (Arthur Franz) pasted onto backing sheet, inserted behind free front endpaper. Exhibits no interior notations. Binding and interior both remain relatively fresh, though script was printed on acidic paper, resulting in marginal tanning and brittle edges, and the yellow correction page bears a medium sized dried liquid stain near upper margin. Comes with a COA from Heritage Auctions. From the personal collection of Stanley Kramer.
