Description

The Outsiders (Zoetrope, 1982), Custom-Bound Copy of Shooting Script with Inlaid Studio and BTS Photos, Synopsis Sheets, and Additional Publicity Materials. Original shooting script, studio xerox on 132-pages (as paginated), documenting principal photography from July 9, 1982. Custom-bound in brown leather with a gold-embossed title on the front and spine, plus producer Fred Roos' name at lower right front. Bound at the beginning is a large section of press kit synopses and biographies, along with a copy of the high school petition from a Fresno, CA librarian signed by students and faculty-reportedly what caught Francis Ford Coppola's attention and led to his adaptation of S.E. Hinton's heartbreaking novel about growing up in a gang in the 1960s. S.E. "Suzie" Hinton's The Outsiders essentially launched the Young Adult genre, giving young readers a raw, emotional look at real-world struggles-poverty, violence, class division, and loss-through the eyes of teenagers. Coppola's film adaptation respects that legacy, refusing to talk down to its audience and treating the characters' pain and circumstances with cinematic seriousness. The result is a film that continues to resonate with generations of viewers who see themselves in the story. The bound copy contains a photocopy of the "Final Script" with a notation at the top reading "WGA Comparison Draft". This was reportedly the version submitted to the WGA for arbitration of screenplay credit, which was ultimately awarded to Kathleen Rowe (screenplay) with a story credit to original author S.E. Hinton. Scattered throughout the script are laid-in press and behind-the-scenes photos of the remarkable young cast, including Patrick Swayze, Matt Dillon, Emilio Estevez, Rob Lowe, Tom Cruise, Ralph Macchio, C. Thomas Howell, and Diane Lane-all of whom went on to major film careers. The script also includes a group of 16 Magazine issues featuring the young cast at the height of their teen idol fame. Though critics questioned whether Coppola had strayed from his auteur roots, The Outsiders was a box-office success and deeply resonated with teen audiences. For Coppola and Roos, the film marked a continued engagement with S.E. Hinton's work, followed by Rumble Fish (1983), shot in the same town (Tulsa, OK) with several of the same actors, but rendered in stark black and white -a bold artistic move for the era. The volume concludes with a large section of press reviews, programs, and contemporaneous ephemera, along with numerous publicity and behind-the-scenes photographs inserted on blank pages throughout. A remarkable, custom-assembled record of a landmark film and timeless story-one whose cultural relevance continues today with the Tony Award-winning Broadway adaptation. Item exhibits fading, wear, and age. The poster is for reference only and is not included with this lot. Comes with a COA from Heritage Auctions. From the Estate of Fred Roos.
