The Birds (Paramount, 1963), Tippi Hedren Set of (2) Costume Sketches for Alfred Hitchcock Screen Test by Edith Head. Pair of vintage original costume sketches accomplished in gouache and ink on 14" x 17" artist's paper by legendary costume designer Edith Head. When Hitchcock first "discovered" Tippi Hedren, he arranged for a series of screen tests with her prior to filming The Birds. He had Edith design a number of outfits and filmed Tippi wearing them in order to see how she moved, spoke, and came across on film. Those screentests are viewable on YouTube: "Tippi Hedren's Screen Test for Birds 1963 - Alfred Hitchcock Movie". Both costumes were only worn for screen tests, and neither appear in the film. One illustration features Tippi in an evening gown, featuring a black lace bodice with a white skirt, accessorized with a matching black lace shawl. "Tippi Hedren" is written at the bottom left, and Edith's signature is at the bottom right. The next illustration depicts a white evening gown with sleeveless lace overlay. Notated "Tippi Hedren test, lace test". Edith's signature is present at the bottom right. Exhibiting age and production handling with perforations at top margin of single leaf.
