Description

Star Trek: The Original Series (Paramount, 1966-1969), Gene Roddenberry Personal Work Draft with Annotations from Original Pilot Episode "The Cage". Vintage original working copy draft for the original pilot episode by Gene Roddenberry, 90-pages (as paginated) on mimeograph pages with hand-typed pages and pencil annotations throughout indicating dialogue changes, scene rearrangement, and directional cues. With handwritten, "Work Copy" in red pencil on the upper righthand corner and date "9-3-64" in pencil, updating the earlier "Rough Draft / 8-17-64" printed on the lower right corner. The original gateway for Roddenberry's new series, the original pilot explores concepts that were central to the series as a whole, including power struggles between races, the threat of nuclear war, paranoia, the conflict between reality and emotion, and the nature of freedom versus captivity. Although this pilot was rejected by NBC for being "too cerebral" and "slow", Roddenberry convinced the network to produce a second pilot, which was received more favorably and gave the show a greenlight to produce the first season. "The Cage" was later reworked into the two-part episode, "The Menagerie". Unbound on 13" x 8.5" legal-sized paper and with some minor bumped corners and smudges from pencil-use. A remarkable work copy of a landmark part of television history, with the writer's own hand present throughout. Comes with a COA from Heritage Auctions.
