Singin' in the Rain (MGM, 1952), Studio Script Department "Complete/OK'd" Master File Copy Script. Vintage original "Master File Copy/ Complete" 97- all white page (as paginated) Singin' in the Rain (1952) script, bradded and bound in blue studio typed and labeled wraps, dated 4-11-51, with changes noted through 7-20-51. Front wrap bears script dept. printed label stamped "File Copy", with same and "Complete" stamps elsewhere, and is typed with various production notations including "Okayed by Mr. Freed/ Directors:/ Gene Kelly and/ Stanley Donen/ From:/ Betty Comden/ Adolph Green/ 4-11-51". One of the most beloved musicals of all time, the film is set during the transition from silent films to "talkies" in Hollywood. The plot follows Don Lockwood (Gene Kelly), a silent film star grappling with the challenges of sound technology and the discovery of ingénue Kathy Selden (Debbie Reynolds). Its satirical, yet affectionate portrayal of Golden Age Hollywood and indelible musical numbers make the film a perpetual delight. Gene Kelly is unforgettable in this longstanding musical favorite, a film in which he stars and also co-directs. "All I Do Is Dream Of You," "Make 'Em Laugh," and "Good Morning," are just a few of the classic hit tunes, along with Kelly's legendary performance of the title song. Also in top form are Debbie Reynolds, Donald O'Connor, and Jean Hagen, who makes it painfully clear that she ain't "people", but a shimmering star in the cinema firmament. Of special note is the script department check-out pocket and card inside front wrap, which states "This is our only available file copy. If lost or damaged it will necessitate the expense of re-copying or re-running this material." Also noteworthy is the green inter-office communication sheet bound in at front, which states "The following name change has been made in the SINGING IN THE RAIN script dated 4-11-51: KATHY SANDS has been changed to KATHY SELDEN". As the film's title is clearly printed on cover and throughout as "Singing In The Rain" it is unclear at what point in time it officially became "Singin'...." as spelled on posters and the film's opening title credits. Wraps show normal production handling and minor age-toning, with very slight chipping to margins, and vertical crease near spine from repeated cover opening; interior remains exceptionally clean and well-preserved apart from the frontis-sheet memo which is on acidic pulp paper, and is consequently brittle and toned.
