Description

Samson and Delilah (Paramount, 1949), Sada Cowen's Annotated Translation of the Wladimir Jabotinsky Novel. Vintage translation of the Russian novel Philister Uber dir, Simson! by Wladimir Jabotinsky containing 364 pages and measuring 8.5" x 11". This transcript was the first phase in the long production history of the epic film. DeMille purchased the rights to Jabotinsky's novel primarily due to the addition of the character "Delilah", who is not mentioned by name in the Bible. Screenwriter Cowen, who had a working relationship with the filmmaker, was tasked with creating the translation. The film was originally planned as the follow-up to Cleopatra (1934), but postponed indefinitely for production of The Crusades (1935). It would take another decade before DeMille's version of the story would be committed to celluloid. This rare, hand-typed translation, dated October 1, 1925, features Cowen's original annotations written in pencil. Exhibits production wear, toning, and tearing. Comes with a COA from Heritage Auctions.
