"These books provided so much insight into the sport and the colorful characters who participate in boxing. I used them all the time for reference and I would say the author, Pierce Egan, is perhaps the greatest boxing writer of all time. These books provided voluminous amounts of material for me to draw on."

    More Information:

Boxiana was an indispensable part of a sporting gentleman's library, and the final authority in the settling of arguments related to "the gentle science." This is one of the most important nineteenth-century sporting references ever written, giving accounts of bare-knuckle bouts that lasted as long as forty-three rounds. "It is not difficult to understand, at this distance of time, why Boxiana has had such an impact upon its age. For one thing, in most respects it was a good deal more comprehensive, as well as more accurate, than its predecessors and contemporaries... He speaks to sportsmen in their own tongue, linking amateurs together in the intimacy of a shared jargon and yet not laying it on so thickly as to exclude the interested outsider. Stylistically, it seems to me that each of the five volumes of Boxiana improved upon the previous one." (Reid).
