Description

Marilyn Monroe Typed and Signed Lawsuit Settlement Document (1961). Vintage original 1-page typed signed settlement agreement from November 6, 1961, for a lawsuit brought against Marilyn Monroe by her then-publicist, Joe Wolhandler, signed by the actress in black ink on official Supreme Court of the State of New York letterhead onion skin carbon paper. The settlement reads, "It is hereby stipulated and agreed by and between JOE WOLHANDLER and MARILYN MONROE PRODUCTIONS, INC. and their respective attorneys, that the matters in dispute between said parties JOE WOLHANDLER and MARILYN MONROE PRODUCTIONS, INC. are hereby disposed of and settled upon the following terms and conditions. On or before the 1st day of February, 1962, JOE WOLHANDLER and MARILYN MONROE PRODUCTIONS, INC. shall exchange General Releases, provided that the terms and conditions of settlement agreement entered into on the 3rd day of November, 1961,have been complied with." Although the exact specifics remain murky, it is known that tension arose between Monroe and Wolhandler regarding business engagements, resulting in a legal dispute that ended in the settlement payment outlined in this document. Signed by Monroe, Wolhandler, and attorneys for both parties each in black ink. Accompanied by a legal affidavit of Service by Mail, which was presented to Monroe through her attorneys, stipulating her production company, Marilyn Monroe Productions, Inc., as the defendant in the ensuing case. Settlement leaf measures 8.5" x 13" and typed document folded measures 9" x 3.75" and unfolded to 15.5" x 9". This lawsuit preceded a particularly turbulent time for Monroe, following her divorce from Miller, her relocation to Los Angeles, and several months before a discrepancy with 20th Century resulted in her firing from the production on Something's Got to Give. Items exhibit signs of age and wear, including crease lines from prior folding, toning, fold separation, and occasional stains. Provenance: University Archives, "Fantastic Selection of Autographed Documents, Manuscripts, Brooks & Relics", August 29, 2017, Lot #157. Authenticated signature: Marilyn Monroe; other signatures inconclusive. Full LOA from PSA/DNA. Please allow 6-8 weeks for delivery.
