Description

Caught Between Fresh Love and Painful Heartbreak, Marilyn Monroe Writes an Early Love Note to Arthur Miller As She Mourns Her Divorce from Joe DiMaggio:
"Please just trust me at least this much that I am in mad about you... But all of me won't be there. My mourning period isn't over yet."

Marilyn Monroe Handwritten Note to Arthur Miller on Western Union Telegram Envelope. [Undated, ca. 1955]. Vintage original note written on the back of a Western Union Telegram envelope, measuring 6.5" x 3.5".

Marilyn writes in full, "Please just trust me at least this much that I am mad about you and we can always catch up with each other somehow somewhere. You've been so wonderful and kind and on top of it all you are a very exciting man. But all of me won't be there. My mourning period isn't over yet I know."

Given the context, this brief note was likely written to Arthur Miller at the start of their relationship, which began in early 1955. The "mourning period" she mentions likely refers to her troubled relationship with and recent divorce from Joe DiMaggio, which ended in 1954. One can infer, then, that this note was written to offer reassurance to Miller of her feelings for him, despite signs of hesitation and an acknowledgment that her heartbreak over DiMaggio had not fully subsided.

Handwritten in pencil on verso of a Western Union Telegram envelope, with front side containing unrelated pencil notes in Marilyn's hand regarding upcoming travel planning. Envelope exhibits signs of age, handling, and wear including foxing, tears from where envelope was originally opened prior to her writing this note, scattered stains and a 1.25" diameter stain on front side of envelope not affecting text. A rare, intimate note, likely documenting the dawn of Monroe and Miller's storied romance. Comes with a COA from Heritage Auctions. From the Estate of Norman and Hedda Rosten.
