Francis in the Navy Script Lot. He wasn't very sublime -- decidedly not -- but Francis the Talking Mule was one of the box office attractions that reliably reaped solid profits for Universal-International Studios during the 1950s. This lot features three artifacts from Francis In the Navy: the final shooting script (February 4, 1955), the continuity and dialogue script (June 15, 1955), and the 82-page production budget booklet. The last is packed with fascinating information; e.g., compare the salary of Donald O'Connor (who starred in the dual roles of Peter and Slicker) with that of Chill Wills (who provided the voice of Francis), and then compare both these salaries with that of 25-year-old Clint Eastwood (who had fifth-billing as Jonesy). Information on sets, costumes, the San Diego location shoot -- a true blueprint of how a studio slickly and economically assembled a surefire production in the mid 1950s. By the way, this was the sixth and last of Donald O'Connor's Francis films -- he complained the mule got more fan mail than he did. Very Good to Excellent condition.
