Dinner at Eight Original MGM Vault Copy Script. MGM Studios claimed that it was a Hollywood constellation, proudly boasting "more stars than the heavens" -- and the Metro luminaries were at their most stunningly brilliant in 1933's legendary Dinner at Eight . The catty one-liners of Marie Dressler, the unforgettable suicide scene of John Barrymore, the hilarious boudoir battles of Jean Harlow and Wallace Beery, the dying bravery of Lionel Barrymore, the fluttery vanity of Billie Burke -- all came together magnificently in this David O. Selznick production, masterfully directed by George Cukor. Based on the great Broadway play by George S. Kaufman and Edna Ferber, this March 1, 1933 version was adapted by Academy Award-winning screenwriter Frances Marion -- before the later contributions by Donald Ogden Stewart and Herman J. Mankiewicz -- and as such is a very rare and desirable movie document. A blueprint for many all-star films to follow, this script is 151 pages long and, interestingly, had not yet received the infamous "I was reading a book the other day" curtain line exchange between Harlow's Kitty and Dressler's Carlotta. Instead: Kitty: "I love to eat late. We went to Spain once, Dan and I, and in Madrid, they eat dinner at ten o'clock and the shows don't begin until twelve." Carlotta: "Really? What time is sunrise -- noon?" The script also contains some rather racy and raucous dialogue (e.g., "Shut your face, you slut!") that never made it into the released film. This copy has MGM's "Vault Copy" sticker on the cover and the word "wardrobe" penciled above the sticker. Very Good condition. A wonderful relic from one of the greatest classics of MGM's Golden Age.
