Dalton Trumbo's Personal File Copy of the Hays Code Booklet. Adopted in 1930, The Hays Code (named after its creator, Will H. Hays) was the set of industry censorship guidelines that governed the production of the vast majority of movies released by major studios from 1930 until it was replaced by the MPAA rating system in 1968. This booklet is dated June 13, 1934 (the point when the Code began to be rigidly enforced), and lays out the guidelines of what was and was not acceptable in film. Among its rules: nudity, illegal drug use, and dirty words were forbidden, as were scenes of childbirth, miscegenation, and surgical operations. This copy of the guidelines belonged to Dalton Trumbo, the blacklisted screenwriter of Roman Holiday and Spartacus. It is accompanied by a single-page memo dated November 5, 1939, listing words deemed unacceptable for use in a motion picture. The booklet is in Fine to Very Fine condition with some moisture damage; the memo is in Very Fine condition with some toning and a fold crease. Two fascinating pieces of Hollywood history.
