Description

Cyrano de Bergerac (United Artists, 1950), Stanley Kramer Personal Book-Bound Script. Vintage original 127-page screenplay by Carl Foreman, from Edmond Rostand's play, based on the Brian Hooker translation. Undated, with blue, yellow and pink revision pages dated to July 10, 1950. Produced by Stanley Kramer, directed by Michael Gordon, starring José Ferrer (winner of the best actor Oscar, and Golden Globe, for this role), Mala Powers and Morris Carnovsky. Both director Gordon and character actor Carnovsky would suffer Carl Foreman's fate of blacklisting by Joseph McCarthy's witch-hunting HUAC committee, causing debilitating interruptions in all three highly creative, promising careers. This film was actually a fall-back substitute for producer Stanley Kramer when his pet project, High Noon became bogged down in copyright issues. The present script was custom-bound for producer Stanley Kramer's personal library in dark red leather with title stamped in gilt on the front board and spine, with marbled endpapers. Vintage original 8" x 10" gelatin silver portrait photo of "Cyrano" (José Ferrer) pasted onto backing sheet, inserted after free front end paper. Exhibits several interior hand-notations in pencil and ink, most notably a number of dialogue segments lined out, plus a note attributed to Kramer, "This scene? Talk to Mike [Gordon] and Carl [Foreman]". Binding and interior both remain relatively fresh and unhandled, with only minor detracting age or handling issues, with exception of page 45, which bears tears at top and bottom near spine, perhaps having begun to be torn out during production rewrites. Comes with a COA from Heritage Auctions. From the personal collection of Stanley Kramer.
