Description

Buster Keaton Historic Original Typed Signed Document Relinquishing All Rights to His Creative Property "Buster Keaton Productions" (Los Angeles, 1938). History altering single page typed document concerning the sale for "One thousand Dollars, lawful money of the United States of America" of Buster Keaton's own production company, which he established during the silent film era to established complete creative control over his own work. He then lost this control and the consequent creativity at the beginning of talking films when his industry mogul brother-in-law Joe Schenck sold his contract to MGM, a company legendary for its own iron-clad control over the lives and work of all its "properties". By the time of the contract offered here, Keaton's career was in ruins, and silent films were considered worthless, and it wasn't until film historian Raymond Rohauer rediscovered Keaton and his early creative genius in 1954, buying back the rights to Keaton's work, eventually presenting a much-heralded revival at the 1965 Venice Film Festival, cementing forever Keaton's well-deserved place among the giants of the silver screen. Being a legal notarized contract, document is here signed on November 9, 1938 in Keaton's legal birth name, Joseph F. Keaton in black fountain pen. Document exhibits a trace of general handling but remains free of any notable staining or age toning. Comes with a COA from Heritage Auctions.
