Billy Wilder Spirit of St. Louis Scripts and Photos. Two original scripts and three original b&w still photographs from the Warner Bros. production of writer-director Billy Wilder's 1957 biopic of aviation pioneer Charles Lindbergh (James Stewart). The (non-annotated) scripts include the "Second Draft, Part I", October 18, 1955, 125 pages, green construction-paper covers with two metal clips; and "Final," January 8, 1957, 97 pages, yellow construction-paper covers with two metal clips, marked "This script is the property of Leland Hayward-Billy Wilder Prod., Inc., Warner Bros. Studio, Burbank, Calif." The script is dated just a few months before the film's premiere, and was more than likely issued as an "as-shot" draft. The photos show three aircraft used as research for the film, including an image of the original 1927 Spirit of St. Louis plane. The screenplay was adapted by Wilder, Wendell Mayes, and Charles Lederer from Lindbergh's 1954 Pulitzer Prize-winning book. Stewart, who had achieved a stunning career as a command pilot during World War II, lobbied Warner Bros. for the part, despite the fact that he was nearly twice as old as Lindbergh had been during the 1927 Transatlantic flight. The scripts are in Fine condition with minor age toning; the photos are Very Fine. From the Billy Wilder Archive.
