    Description

An Orson Welles-Received Letter from Darryl F. Zanuck, 1952. Three pages, typed on Twentieth Century Fox letterhead, dated "October 13, 1952," sent to Welles in Rome, reading in part "Dear Orson: / Yesterday I saw Othello. First I am going to tell you the good things / about it and then I am going to tell you the things I think are com- / pletely wrong," Zanuck then proceeds to outline just that in the next sixteen paragraphs (!), ending with "The above is savage criticism but if you follow this recommendation / the final result may very well be far from hopeless. You must not give /up on it now..." signed in blue fountain pen ink on the right side "Darryl;" included is a copy of an 'Italcable' telegram with Welles' response reading "Dear Darryl Thank You So Much For / Your Letter Giving Contents Carefullest / [sic]Thought / Fondest Regards Orson" - quite possibly a sarcastic tone as Welles was used to the studios bosses ruining his "vision" at this point in his career; further included with a letter from Beatrice Welles indicating she consigned this lot directly to Heritage Auctions. (Please note there is a rusty paperclip mark on the letter.)
