A Stan Laurel Massive Archive of Fascinating Signed Letters Including One Sent a Week Before His Death, 1960-1965. Approximately 60 letters and postcards, ranging in date from 1960 to 1965, typed on various kinds of stationery (mostly Laurel's personalized notepaper or his Santa Monica apartment letterhead -- 'The Oceana'], all hand-signed usually in black fountain pen ink "Stan," all written to a "William 'Bill' Brown" [a young Canadian super-fan who later changed his surname to "Starkell" when he moved to the States], correspondence is lengthy and quite engrossing as Laurel answers countless questions Brown/Starkell evidently posed to him, most of which are about the early days of Hollywood and Laurel and Hardy's part in it; Laurel also frequently references his own films, their genesis, and Golden Era actors he had personal interactions with such as Charlie Chaplin, Ben Turpin, Rudolph Valentino, Lon Chaney, Wallace Beery, Jean Harlow, Eddie Cantor, and Hal Roach, among others; in one letter, he even notes how Hardy's weight fluctuated from 275 to 360! Of special and poignant interest is a postcard dated "Feb. 16th. '65" reading in part "Yes, my 75th is in next June - / why bring that up!! I never did anything to you!!" -- sadly, Laurel would die just seven days later, never seeing that birthday; also included in this collection are four small black and white photographs of Laurel (with others) which he signed and dated in black fountain pen ink; when reading this correspondence, it's obvious Laurel enjoyed the dialogue with this young Canadian and thankfully Brown/Starkell saved it as its content now illuminates the early days of Hollywood from the unique perspective of one of its most important players. Please note our catalogue description does NOT do justice to this lot at all -- each letter must be read individually to comprehend the kindness, charm, and wit of Mr. Stan Laurel; consigned directly by the widow of William Brown/Starkell.
