    A James Cagney Extensive Collection of Signed and Other Documents Related to The Players Club in NYC, 1940s-1960s. Housed in a large black 3-ring binder, comprising countless paper related to the actor's membership in this longstanding club devoted to the arts still located at 16 Gramercy Park in New York City; including letters sent to Cagney by members, carbon copies of letters he wrote/responded to (e.g. his recommendations for membership for buddies such as Bert Lahr and Franchot Tone), telephone call receipts, membership due forms, flyers and advertisements for events at the club, minutes for meetings, room charge receipts, and of most interest -- about 30 receipts from the restaurant at the club which were all 'signed for' by the actor in either in pencil or various colors of ballpoint ink "J Cagney;" the actor was a member of The Players his entire professional career and based on this archive, it's obvious he spent countless days and nights there, no doubt having a grand time!

    According to the club's website: "The Players is a private social club founded in 1888 when Edwin Booth, the greatest American actor of his time, purchased a Gothic Revival-style mansion facing Gramercy Park and commissioned architect Stanford White to transform it into a certain club 'for the promotion of social intercourse between the representative members of the dramatic profession and the kindred professions of literature, painting, sculpture and music, and the patrons of the arts.'"
