Description

A Grace Kelly Collection of Handwritten Letters, Notes and Other Documents Mostly Related to Her Wedding, 1956. All saved by Pauline McCloskey, Grace Kelly's close family friend (and possible godmother) who attended all the festivities surrounding the actress' fairy tale wedding to Prince Rainier III in April 1956 including: 1) a black and white photographic postcard depicting Grace and Prince Rainier, signed in black fountain pen ink on the verso "Grace Kelly" and dated in another hand "4/10/56" [a week before her wedding]; 2) a thank you note to McCloskey, entirely handwritten in black fountain pen ink by Kelly in March 1956, with its original transmittal envelope (heavily water damaged); 3) a thank you note to McCloskey, entirely handwritten in black fountain pen ink by Kelly in June 1956, with its original transmittal envelope; 4) a thank you note to McCloskey, entirely handwritten in black fountain pen ink by Kelly in February 1957, with its original transmittal envelope; 5) a thank you note to McCloskey, entirely handwritten in black fountain pen ink by Kelly in May 1957, with its original transmittal envelope; 6) a thank you note to McCloskey, typed in April 1959, signed in blue ballpoint ink "Grace," with its original transmittal envelope; 7) a Christmas card to McCloskey, entirely handwritten in red ballpoint ink by Kelly circa 1960, no envelope; 8) nine never-before-seen color slides of the actress on the ocean liner SS Constitution in April 1956 on her way to Monaco to get married (plus about 20 other slides depicting family/friends who accompanied Grace on the ship); 9) a group of paper items/documents related to the voyage on the SS Constitution such as passenger lists, dinner menus, cocktail invitations, and newspaper clippings, most of which mention Grace's name and her pending nuptials; 10) a group of invitations related to Grace's wedding festivities in Monaco (many of which are water damaged but still legible) including: a wedding announcement, a wedding invite, a wedding program, a 'gala performance' invite, and related dinner invites, among a few other pieces; 11) four unsigned greeting cards from Grace as the "Princess of Monaco;" 12) a large collection of mostly international postcards from Margaret [signed "Mele" as she was nicknamed] and John Kelly [Grace's parents] or "Adelaide" [Lehman, another Kelly family friend] to McCloskey over the years; 13) four books about the Kelly family: "That Kelly Family" by John McCallum, "Of Me I Sing" by Walter C. Kelly [Grace's uncle], "Princess of Monaco" by Gant Gaither, and "Her Serene Highness Princess Grace of Monaco" by Trevor Hall; and 14) some miscellaneous items such as a Grace Kelly personality pamphlet, two letters about her from journalists, and a German newspaper clipping, among a few other pieces -- this whole archive was consigned by the great granddaughter of McCloskey who relays that her great grandmother gave Grace Kelly a book titled "Bride's Manual: A Manual of Catholic Devotions with Mass for Marriage Ceremony and the Nuptial Blessing" which Grace carried on her wedding day and which is now on display at the Philadelphia Museum of Art -- overall, a fascinating collection related to one of the world's all-time great beauties who literally became a princess!
