Description

Vivien Leigh's Costume Petticoat from Gone With the Wind. Hollywood was in the midst of a highly publicized search for a leading lady to star as Scarlett O'Hara in David O. Selznick's adaptation of Gone With the Wind when Vivien Leigh expressed interest in the role. Selznick had seen her in Fire Over England and A Yank at Oxford and felt she was talented but "too British" for the role. Selznick's brother Myron felt differently and introduced the two on the set of the burning Atlanta Depot scene, telling David, "Hey, genius. Meet your Scarlett O'Hara." Leigh formally auditioned the next day; the rest, as they say, was history.

This cotton petticoat was worn by Leigh in the classic movie, and it can be seen prominently in the film. The petticoat is in Very Fine condition, with mild overall wear and some discoloration due to aging, and has a Selznick Int. Pictures Inc. costume label with production #28-108 sewn into the waistband. The item was previously auctioned by Christie's in 2002, and is accompanied by a vintage b&w 8" x 10" publicity still featuring Leigh wearing it as part of her costume opposite co-star Hattie McDaniel.
