Description

The Wizard of Oz (MGM, 1939), Judy Garland "Dorothy Gale" Original Signature Crème Blouse from the Film Production of The Wizard of Oz Accompanied by a Gingham Dress Used for Touring Purposes. Vintage original high-necked crème organdy blouse with princess sleeves and delicate blue rickrack accents sewn into the collar and sleeve cuffs, with rear snap button closure and retaining internal handwritten "Judy Garland" and "4461-1". With almost no introduction necessary, this blouse is a central component of the single-most identifiable costume ensemble to ever grace the silver screen - the simple attire worn by Judy Garland's Dorothy Gale in 1939's The Wizard of Oz. Along with her gingham pinafore dress and those dashing Ruby Slippers, Dorothy's salt-of-the-earth farm girl ensemble was tied together with a simple, dignified crème blouse with delicate rickrack and innocuous princess sleeves. Included with the original screen-worn blouse is the accompanying replica touring pinafore dress, both from the collection of notable Oz collector Michael Shaw, who obtained them directly from costumer Kent Warner when he was hired by David Weisz Co. to identify costumes and organize the now-legendary MGM Auction in 1970. Along with his original Ruby Slippers and Wicked Witch Hat (both sold by Heritage Auctions on December 7, 2024 for $32.5 million and $2.93 million, respectively), Shaw toured the U.S. with this original blouse and touring pinafore dress for more than a decade in Michael Shaw's Hollywood on Tour from the 1980s to the 1990s. All costumes for the singular musical were designed by legendary MGM costume designer Adrian, whose work on this film has stood the test of time, propelling the costume pieces themselves into a mythic territory among collectors. The blouse exhibits expected signs of production wear, handling, and age, most notably with toning to the organdy throughout and 4-spot stains. Comes with a COA from Heritage Auctions.
