Description

The Gene Kelly Suit from "Singin' in the Rain." Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer, 1952. The jacket made of grey wool with multi-colored flecks throughout, single-breasted, four button front closure, self-belt with a two button closure, distinct vertical seams sewn down front and back, two large pockets, grey satin lining, inside breast pocket label reads "Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer / Gene Kelly / No. 1546-8565;" together with matching trousers, flat front, button-fly, two side slit pockets, two back welt pockets, label same as jacket but with an added "30 1/2 / 31 1/2;" worn by the star as he portrayed "Don Lockwood" in THE scene where he's singing the title song, 'Singin' in the Rain,' in arguably one of the most famous and beloved musical numbers in all film history. Even if you've never seen this film, you know this scene, you know this song, and you know Gene Kelly's mind-blowing dance steps that still amaze 61 years later. (Please note there is evident water staining on the inside jacket lining due to Kelly being drenched with water throughout the sequence; also, there are two small areas of repair on the jacket -- close to the upper right side by the lapel and close to the hem on the lower left side.

PROVENANCE:
This suit was originally sold at the now-famous 1970 MGM Auction; the current owner remembers buying it towards the end of the month-long event when hundreds of unidentified actors' suits were just hanging on a rack with price tags on them. He saw that the jacket label read "Gene Kelly" and then he noticed all the water staining on the interior lining and immediately realized it was THAT suit from THAT number from THAT musical. We won't tell you the price he paid...
