Description
The Crusades (Paramount, 1935), Loretta Young "Berengaria" Cream Satin Gown. Vintage original cream satin bliaut-style gown with close-fit long sleeves and seed pearl bead trim along the bust, keyhole neckline, and basque drop-waistline. The beaded circle appliqué at the upper left shoulder was originally the brooch from the fur-trimmed cape worn with the gown (not present). The appliqué was added to cover the hole from the arrow that pierces the actor's chest, suggesting the dress was one of one. The hole from the arrow can be seen on the interior of the bodice. Worn by Berengaria (Loretta Young) when King Richard (Henry Wilcoxon) crowns her the Queen of England. Fearing that her presence is causing strife among the Crusaders, she enters the battlefield hoping to die, only to be pierced in the chest with an arrow and captured by Saladin's (Ian Keith) forces. Created by costume designer Travis Banton. Gown exhibits production wear and age including discoloration and stress at the seams including the bust darts and the hook-and-eye closures across the left shoulder and down the side of the gown. The trim has some missing beads and the woven metal used in the criss-cross pattern has oxidized and darkened over time.
