Description

Sydney Greenstreet's Robe from Casablanca, Also Worn by Hugo Haas. Sydney Greenstreet, the "Fat Man" of Bogart's The Maltese Falcon, once upon a time wore this massive (size 58) green robe with golden-brown sash and green tassels. It bears the Warner Bros. Pictures tag (sewn into interior under the collar) May 25, 1942, that lists the production as #410 -- the starting date and production number of no less than Casablanca. Greenstreet supported Bogart and Bergman in the Best Picture Academy Award winner of 1943 as Signor Ferrari, the oddly sinister proprietor of the "Blue Parrot." It's possible Greenstreet wore the robe in a scene cut or altered (Casablanca underwent many revisions), or perhaps the studio provided it to him to relax in between scenes during the shoot. The robe has a flamboyantly decadent majesty about it. In addition, there's a second Warner Bros. tag, dated May 14, 1947, sewn near interior left sleeve and noting that Hugo Haas -- himself a corpulent actor who played heavies masterfully -- also donned this robe. The film was likely My Girl Tisa, a "United States Pictures" release filmed with Warner personnel. Such wickedly distinguished lineage might inspire the robe's new owner to chuckle lecherously while wearing it -- consider yourself duly warned. A quite spectacular piece of vintage Hollywood apparel, associated with a beloved classic the American Film Institute voted the #2 film of all time. In Excellent condition.
