Description

Nolan Miller Gold, Hand-Beaded Gown Designed for Lucille Ball, with Original Marker Sketch. Ca.1980; Gown: chiffon, beads, cotton/metallic; Label: Nolan Miller; Dress Size: Unknown.

Floor-length, hand-beaded chiffon gown with fitted bodice and straight slit skirt. The fitted bodice features a "Queen Ann" neckline, with high back and scalloped front line. The shoulder is padded leading to a gathered full sleeve which tapers down to a narrow wrist with a zipper closure. The gown is elaborately hand beaded. The neckline and center front are beaded in a cascade of flowers and leaves in gold bugle beads, small faceted rounds and larger faceted rounds in "prong" setting. An overall pattern in gold bugle beads radiates from the beaded flowers in flowing lines. The gown is closed at center back with a zipper and hook & eye. It is fully lined in stripped cotton with metallic threads, and has weights in the hem seam at the corners of the slit and center front. Included with this lot is a lively marker sketch with glitter accentuating the central beaded area. It is signed in black marker and labeled "Lucille Ball." A true treasure in itself within Nolan's work, this gown was used by Lucille Ball for a personal appearence, and certainly reflects the glamour associated with one of American's favorite stars. The gown is in Very Fine condition with some loss and repair to the bead work and the sketch in Fine condition has a crease in the lower left corner. From the Nolan Miller Collection.
