Mainbocher Seven-Piece Suit and Jacketed Dress Owned by Edie Adams. Rich materials and crisp precision that mark the work of the designer Mainbocher are clearly evident in the two suits presented in this lot. An impressive five piece suit in a very heavy black jacquard weave comprises a dress, jacket, sleeveless top, straight knee length skirt and outer coat that offer incredible versatility. Each piece is a simple classic. The shift, with an attached narrow belt, two pleats from the thigh, a low scooped back and tie at the neck has a side zipper which opens to a full lining and ribbon belt, and can be coupled with the waist length jacket with round collar, four self covered buttons that slide into perfectly detailed button holes and finished with a slit at the base of either princess seam. The jacket can accompany the skirt and a top that follows the lines of the jacket and to finish the suit is the double breasted outer coat with ¾ length sleeves and two scooped side pockets. The second suit in a lighter weight fine black and tan jacquard weave, comprised of a shift and jacket is nearly identical in design to those described above, but with radiating buttons closing the jacket. These true 1960s classics are in Very Fine condition. Accompanied by a hardcover copy of Edie Adams' autobiography, Sing a Pretty Song. From the Ernie Kovacs/Edie Adams Estate Archive.
