Description
Mainbocher and Galanos for Amelia Gray, Owned by Edie Adams. Here we present two dresses designed by Galanos for Amelia Gray, who catered to the richest women in Los Angeles. The first, a simple black crepe A-line dress with a single strap supporting a straight cut bodice and a pocket within the side seam. A side zipper on the opposite side reveals a lined interior with secondary stayed bodice lining with separate zipper. The second Galanos design is an A-line dress in pale yellow textured wool crepe placed on a diagonal, the line of the bodice repeating with a single strap at right connecting to the full back. Hooks at the left shoulder and side zipper open to a self lined interior, giving the dress great weight. This wool lining is covered at back in cream chiffon and charmeuse at the neck and strap. The third dress was designed by Mainbocher in a medium weight satin. A fitted bodice with spaghetti straps leads to a tucked skirt, however the focus of this dress is a full circle of fabric running on a diagonal from the hem to the arm, doubling back and extending to the rear hem, creating a cape like flourish. The side zipper reveals the lining with heavily stayed back and coiled stay at bust and wide ribbon belt. In Fine condition with desiccation to the chiffon back lining within the cream-colored dress, these three pieces as stylish today as they were 40 years ago, by two of the most prominent American designers of the day would be a great addition to your wardrobe. Accompanied by a hardcover copy of Edie Adams' autobiography, Sing a Pretty Song. From the Ernie Kovacs/Edie Adams Estate Archive.
