Description

John Wayne "Rooster Cogburn" Eye Patch and Personal Dog-Eared and Annotated Working Script from True Grit (Paramount, 1969). Vintage original (2) items including (1) signature character eye patch created by costumer Luster Bayless for John Wayne in his Oscar-winning role as the hard-drinking "Marshall Rooster Cogburn." Constructed of leather and suede. A hole is cut in the eye patch and covered with black wire mesh serving as a see-through scrim for Wayne, while maintaining the appearance of a solid canvas patch. Measures approx. 30 in. long from end to end of leather tie used to affix the patch to the wearer's face. Also includes, (1) John Wayne personal 145-mint green page bradded studio Second Draft Screenplay written by Charles Portis and dated "July 26, 1968." Wayne has folded most of the script pages as is the custom as each scene's pages were completed. There are sporadic character and dialog notes throughout. On page-48 next to the line, "Rooster: I ought to slap your face" Wayne has written, "Paddle your rump." Written boldly in pencil on the verso of the last page is, "Fill your hand and meet your maker. Heya!!! Bo," which would morph in the realized film as, "Fill your hand, you son of a bitch!" The script exhibits age, heavy production wear, and use with page 22 and 23 torn out by "The Duke" himself. The iconic eye patch exhibits only minor production wear. In vintage Very Good condition. Both items from Heritage Auctions "The Personal Property of John Wayne", October 6-7, 2011, lots 44014 & 44087 and originally-issued COAs accompany the lot.
