Description

I Dream of Jeannie (NBC TV, 1965-1970), Barbara Eden "Jeannie" Signature Pink Harem Costume. On the heels of the success of the hit family-meets-fantasy sitcom Bewitched (ABC TV, 1964-1973), and inspired by the film, The Brass Bottle (Universal, 1964), producer Sydney Sheldon conceived the idea for a new series based around a beautiful genie who winds up in the home, and the arms, of a handsome astronaut. After a protracted casting process, Sheldon returned to his initial source of inspiration and selected Barbara Eden, who had co-starred in The Brass Bottle, to play the good-hearted but naïve supernatural conjurer, Jeannie. Costume Designer Gwen Wakeling, a veteran favorite of inimitable filmmakers like Cecil B. DeMille and John Ford, and who received an Academy Award for her work on DeMille's Samson and Delilah in 1950, was selected by the producers to create Barbara Eden's iconic Jeannie costumes for the series. This would be one of Wakeling's final and most memorable projects.
Presented here is a vintage original (5) piece signature Jeannie costume, consisting of (1) ruched pink silk chiffon top constructed upon a nude underwire brassiere, featuring pink floral tassels and pale pink brocade, a bodice reinforced with integral wire stays, lining and padding, back straps with hook-and-eye closure, and retaining internal Columbia Pictures bias label handwritten, "B. Eden - 68 - 3", (1) matching dark pink and reddish velveteen bolero-style short-sleeved vest jacket with braided light-pink trim, integral hem weights, and 2- light pink tassels to each arm, retaining internal Columbia Pictures bias label handwritten, "B. Eden - 1968 - 3", (1) pair of pink silk chiffon "harem" pants with custom-made dark-pink velveteen waistband with braided light pink trim, elasticized cuffs, hook-and-eye and snap back closure, and nude silk lining, retaining internal Columbia Pictures bias label "Doble" [sic], (1) matching dark-pink velveteen ponytail headdress with light pink brocade design, and internal tulle trim and bobby pin for attaching to hair, retaining internal Screen Gems bias label handwritten, "Barba Eden - 2nd - 67" [sic], and (1) loose flowing pink silk chiffon scarf.
This iconic costume embodies the sexual freedom of the 1960s that was a hallmark of the era as the conservatism of the 1950s gave way to the liberation that defined the new decade. Exhibiting production wear, age, and handling with minor soiling to the pants, occasional loose threads and color fading to elements. Lot is accompanied by a pair of tights, a costume necklace, and a custom-made wig with internal wire armature to fit securely beneath the headdress to complete Jeannie's look for display purposes.
