Description

Galanos Original Coat Dress and Mainbocher Suit Worn and Owned by Edie Adams. Sold through Neiman-Marcus, the coat dress carries James Galanos' earliest label Galanos Originals, Beverly Hills. Woven with a black warp and multi-colored weft, the design features ¾ length sleeves, a fitted bodice with pleated skirt, the hips accentuated with buttoned bands that conceal pockets. A placket runs the length of the dress, opening from hips with a series of hidden hooks. Unlike Galanos' later work, while the bodice is lined in satin, the skirt is left unlined. The three-piece pale yellow raw silk suit by Mainbocher comprises a jacket, top and skirt. The short waisted double breasted jacket with four opalescent buttons has ¾ length sleeves and is lined in cream satin. The straight skirt, with tucked waist, lined in cream satin with a back zipper is crowned with the sleeveless top in yellow silk overlaid with corded cream lace embellished with pearl beads. With a snapped band to secure lingerie straps, the top is secured with four hooks at the top of the strap as well as a hook and zipper at the side. These pieces are in Very Fine condition with one button missing on the Galanos dress. Accompanied by a hardcover copy of Edie Adams' autobiography, Sing a Pretty Song. From the Ernie Kovacs/Edie Adams Estate Archive.
