Galanos and Ceil Chapman Gowns, Owned by Edie Adams. From Edie Adams collection of designer clothing that came close to 2,000 pieces are these four gowns, one is identical in construction to a gown in a previous lot (50101) by Galanos for Amelia Gray. In a black satin weave, the V-necked straight skirted gown with spaghetti straps, has a top stitched belt with gold grommets that wraps across the low cut back and is secured with hook and snap. There are also two labeled Galanos gowns, the first is a straight sheath of black netting embroidered with silver and tan over black satin, slit at either side with a side zipper and snap closure on strap. Attached at the straps is a flowing overlay in textured black crepe chiffon open at the right side. The second Galanos gown is a magnificent Grecian design, with amazing weight due to amount of fabric used in the elaborate tight display of pleating. Supported by straps that rise from the center, the pleated bodice fans out to either side with a tight series of pencil pleats added to the center that fall to the thigh where a second pleated insert is added that cascades to the floor. A beatiful bonus to this group is a luscious gown by Ceil Chapman. At first glace you see a floor length sheath in black crepe de chine and this wraps to the back in a faux vest. The magic is at the back where the gown bursts at the waist in a series of gathered chiffon overlays in black over cream over yellow, creating depth and a subtle play of color. The gowns are in Very Fine condition with hole in the lace that can be mended but is not noticeable due to the chiffon overlay. These gowns are simply gorgeous! Accompanied by a hardcover copy of Edie Adams' autobiography, Sing a Pretty Song. From the Ernie Kovacs/Edie Adams Estate Archive.
