Four Dresses by Galanos for Amelia Gray, Owned by Edie Adams. These kicky dresses were sold by Amelia Gray who represented Galanos at her boutique on Wilshire Boulevard in Los Angeles, buying dresses from him on nearly a daily basis, and with the number of Galanos designs in Edie's wardrobe, it wouldn't be surprising if she did the same. Here are four distinctive designs, each finished to perfection. The first, a form fitting shift, the lapel terminating in placket with two large woven leather buttons, zipper closure at back center. The second, as it shouts out its Galanos detailing, is a green wool crepe de chine dress with princess seams masking pockets in front and the zipper to the back. A pleat falls down the back from the neckline, and as always with a side zipper, no matter the width of the neck opening, Galanos used a snap at the shoulder to protect the amazing hairdos of the period. Third is a seemingly simple brown knit dress with a bateaux neckline. On closer examination note the top stitched detail that extends down from the neckline transitioning in front and back to overlays, which covers the side zipper to the rear. An interesting addition is the label identifying "FRONT" at the neckline, making Edie's quick stage changes possible in as little as ten seconds. Last, but certainly not least, is a tight emerald green wool knit, in an A-line design with a double pleat at center waist and turnover collar. These dresses are in Fine condition with some small holes to the knit emerald green dress at back below the zipper as well as staining to the lining of both green dresses. With Galanos' "Ready to Wear" dresses starting at $300 in the early 1960s, these four creations ring of exclusivity. Accompanied by a hardcover copy of Edie Adams' autobiography, Sing a Pretty Song. From the Ernie Kovacs/Edie Adams Estate Archive.
