Description

Edie Adams' Screen-Worn Galanos Suit and Gown with Accompanying Galanos Creations. Edie Adams' star status took her from the stage and screen to the White House and this spectacular Galanos ensemble comprising a floor length gown, jacket, shift and skirt, was not only seen on stage and screen but also at White House functions for both John F. Kennedy and Lyndon B. Johnson. It is not surprising that these pieces were so well used as Edie was a wise investor in fashion and a trend setter wearing the top labels and the most up-to-date fashions, while also creatively reusing pieces over the years in ways the camera didn't easily pick up. By Galanos, a designer that Edie purchased from frequently, we present five pieces in cream damask. The shift and knee length skirt with a single pleat to the back are simple classics, while the straight floor length skirt has a little extra with a second skirt in the cream damask which is exposed at the rear slit. The gown has spaghetti straps and a slightly shaped neck line, tightly fitted and flaring below the knee with a short train, while the most elaborate piece in the lot is the jacket which could easily have been paired with each of the other pieces, heavily embellished with seed pearls, various beads in white and silver and even plaited with silver thread, rhinestones and beaded pendent drops. A truly beautiful lot. Ranging from Very Fine to Good condition, the skirt has a significant stain at the back hem and a very minor stain at the left bottom corner of the jacket. With an image ranging from fashion icon to sex goddess, Edie didn't go unnoticed on her trip to the White house. Pictured in her Galanos gown in her autobiography with JFK, the caption reads "I didn't -- but it was not because I wasn't asked." A copy of the Show Program for the White House Press Dinner in 1963 listing Miss Edie Adams as a performer is included. Also included are three additional gowns: a cream, textured gown identical in design to the gown detailed above; a red velvet gown, also identical in design; and a deep burgundy velvet gown, again in the same design as aforementioned gowns. The red and cream gowns have moderate desiccation to the cup inserts (easily replaced), with mild yellowing to the cream gown. All in all, a fantastic collection of creations! A hardcover copy of Edie Adams' autobiography, Sing a Pretty Song is included as well. From the Ernie Kovacs/Edie Adams Estate Archive.
