Description

Edie Adams' Screen-Worn Don Loper Gowns. A stunning pair of 1956 "Barbie Doll" dresses by Don Loper, one white and the other black of near identical design. The white gown was created for Edie's 1955 debut at The Plaza night club and she liked it so much that a second one in black was ordered for the late show. Later she wore the gown in a Bing Crosby TV special. Form fitted to the knee and flaring to the floor, the dresses are of lace embellished with sequins over a taffeta base. The flaring skirt of five layers of netting gives the dress great body, allowing it nearly to stand on its own; as Edie stated "I could stand right up to it..." The white gown is illustrated in Edie Adams' autobiography, Sing A Pretty Song. Both gowns are in Fine condition, the bra inserts have desiccated, and there is a minor loss of sequins. An interesting note: legend has it that these designs served as inspiration for the original Barbie Doll dress. Accompanied by a hardcover copy of Sing a Pretty Song. From the Ernie Kovacs/Edie Adams Estate Archive.
