Carole Lombard's Screen-Worn Dress from No Man of Her Own. A rare remnant from Lombard's short but glorious career, this black crepe dress with sheer pink accents has an internal Paramount Atelier tag listing Lombard's handwritten last name on the label. This label traces the piece back to Travis Banton and the few but glorious years he had his own atelier within the Studio at Paramount. The ambition of the studio's new hire, Edith Head, made it a short lived venture, but Banton did do most of the work for Lombard and Dietrich during these years. The number 917 on the label identifies the piece as being made and worn in No Man of Her Own. This film was the only pairing of Lombard and her future husband Clark Gable, but they were both married to other people (her to William Powell - later Harlow's fiancée). There were no sparks to be seen flying during the filming, yet they later became one of Hollywood's main couples until she was killed in 1942. Though the sleeves were shortened and the trim replaced after production -- most likely for the desk clerk in The Blue Dahlia -- the rarity, on-screen visibility, and historic elements of the costume take this little black dress to another level altogether.
