Buddy Ebsen's Broadway Tuxedo and Dancing Cane from Flying Colors and Broadway Melody of 1938. Lightning struck twice for this famous Broadway/Hollywood costume. Buddy Ebsen wore the tux and top hat in the musical revue Flying Colors, that opened September 15, 1932 at New York's Imperial Theatre, and in which Ebsen brought down the house in his musical numbers "A Shine on Your Shoes" and "It Was Never Like This." Buddy packed up the tuxedo and topper when he moved to Hollywood and wore it again in the MGM musical classic Broadway Melody of 1938, as he danced with Judy Garland in the "Yours and Mine" number. The complete tux survives and is all here -- coat, pants, cummerbund, white and black vests, white gloves, and top hat, and is accompanied by his dancing cane. In addition, the lot features five 8" x 10" stills from Broadway Melody of 1938 showing Buddy in the costume (four of them with Garland, one with co-stars George Murphy and Eleanor Powell), a photocopy of an October 1, 1969 TV Guide feature ("The Star Who Became a Puppet Who Became a Star") that has a picture of Buddy in the tux, and a full-page newspaper ad from the Orlando Morning Sentinel (May 12, 1939), regarding Buddy's "In Person" performance that night at Orlando's Municipal Auditorium, also showing him in the top hat and tails. The clothing is in Excellent condition; the 36" wooden cane is in Very Fine condition with a fair amount of chipping and cracking to the white plastic tip on top. From the Buddy Ebsen Estate.
