Description
Batman (TCF TV, 1966-1968), Cesar Romero "Joker" Opera Night Costume. Vintage original (3) piece costume ensemble worn by the Joker (Cesar Romero) during the two-part Season 1 Episodes, "The Joker is Wild" and "Batman is Riled", in which his character makes its on-screen debut, consisting of (1) oversized crème satin long-sleeved top with Mandarin collar, bell sleeves, and black tulle rosettes on the chest and sleeves, with snap front closures and retaining internal Western Costume Co. bias label, (1) pair of matching crème satin palazzo pants with wide black satin hems and elastic waist, retaining internal Western Costume Co. stamp, and (1) matching crème satin conical nightcap with 3- custom-made yarn balls affixed to top, retaining internal Western Costume Co. stamp. With his entrance in this two-part episode, Cesar Romero's Joker instantly became one of the most memorable supervillains from the original series, and remains to this day one of the finest on-screen depictions of the nihilistic, obsessive rogue who seems as much to crave infamy as he does chaos. Joker dons this costume ensemble at the Gotham City Opera, where a performance of the Pagliacci aria "Vesti la giubba" is being performed. Sneezing powder, paralyzing gas, and televised riddles put Joker's full range of antics on display in this wonderful early double-episode of the beloved series. Note: Original black yarn rosettes were replaced with tulle rosettes and black trim added to pants following production. Exhibiting production wear and age including soiling, makeup remnants, and minor fabric breaches/tears from handling. This costume piece has been in the collections of two important collectors of Hollywood memorabilia, John Azarian and Dr. Stewart Berkowitz. Provenance: Profiles in History, "The Azarian Collection" December 17, 2019, Lot #1076. Comes with a COA from Heritage Auctions.
