Batman (TCF TV, 1966-1968), Adam West "Batman" and Burt Ward "Robin" Signature Dynamic Duo Costume Ensembles. With no introduction necessary, we are proud to offer an excessively rare and fine vintage original pair of signature ensembles worn by Batman (Adam West) and Robin (Burt Ward) as the Dynamic Duo, the central protagonists of the hit superhero television series, Batman, consisting of (11) pieces for Batman comprising a rarely offered complete ensemble, including (1) signature Bat cowl constructed of stretched sateen fabric over a fiberglass head-form lined with foam padding and fiberglass nose covering, with exterior painted shades of navy blue with light yellow highlights to the eyes and nose and draped cowl neckline with Velcro front closure, retaining handwritten "#1" in black felt-tip to internal foam padding, (1) signature two-tone navy-blue satin walking cape with ring collar, burgundy-colored inner lining, and internal lining to add shape and form, with hook-and-eye front closure and internal snaps for attaching to leotard, inscribed by West to the consignor in silver felt-tip on interior upper-left, "To Stewart / Adam West / Wear Carefully", (1) signature lavender long-sleeved polyblend leotard with yellow and black hand-painted Bat-logo affixed with adhesive on oval canary-yellow field on the chest, with beige-colored felt ring neckline and rear zipper and hook-and-eye closure and rear snaps for attaching cape, retaining internal 20th Century Fox studio label handwritten, "G 29", (1) matching pair of lavender leggings with elastic waistband and calf openings, retaining handwritten "A" in black felt-tip to exterior waistband, (1) signature utility belt constructed of 2- pieces of 3" wide leather, painted bright yellow to exterior and adorned with 4- utility boxes of varying materials, 1- functional metal box, 1- functional leather pouch, and 2- static wood blocks with 1- stamped "ALL PURPOSE BAT-SWATTER" to front, each painted in matching yellow, and with a 5" x 4" brass belt buckle embossed with Bat-logo to center, (1) pair of burgundy-colored satin briefs with elastic waistband, (1) pair of matching dark purple-colored satin gauntlet gloves with leather undersides and 3- sewn-on satin "fins", (1) pair of suede tall boots with studio-applied deep blue-dyed satin with brown underlayer, with zipper and Velcro closure, and (3) gadgets including 1- Bat Fan, 1- breathing apparatus with Bat-logo, and 1- circular device painted blue and yellow, measuring between 4.5" and 12", for storage in the utility belt. As the faithful sidekick lovingly dubbed Boy Wonder, Burt Ward's Robin donned an equally iconic ensemble that brought the comic book character to life, including as presented here a wonderful (6) piece ensemble consisting of (1) signature hero handmade red sleeveless tunic constructed of heavy cotton with yellow shoelace front closure and 12- eyelet rows, with signature "R" patch constructed of a black felt background and yellow felt letter, with ring collar, rear zipper, and hook-and-eye closure, and exterior snaps for connecting cape, retaining internal 20th Century Fox studio label handwritten, "B. WARD", handwritten, "BW" at neckline, and Western Costume Co. stamp, (1) shimmery yellow satin cape featuring pointed collar and hook-and-eye neck closure, (1) army green Jockey brand short-sleeved T-shirt, retaining handwritten "BW" to neckline in black felt-tip, (1) pair of taupe closed-toe leggings, retaining internal handwritten "BW X" to waistband in black felt-tip, (1) pair of army-green knit briefs, and (1) pair of signature green suede winged boots with white laces and rear zipper and hook-and-eye closure covered by an extra piece of suede. Robin's ensemble is accompanied by replica faux leather green gloves, black elastic eye-mask, and black leather belt with gold-painted wooden and resin canister components for display purposes. Items exhibit expected production use, wear, and signs of age. For Batman this includes paint chipping and wear to the cowl, with underlayer pink paint showing through (from prior use in Season 2, Episode 35, "The Contaminated Cowl"), leotard with small holes and severed undercarriage strap from wear, loosening adhesive around chest insignia, and soiling throughout. Leggings exhibit small holes, 4" breach under seat, and several longer breaches to each lower leg area ranging from 2" to 4.5", likely from production for ease of movement. Briefs have 1.5" breach to seat, slits to fingers of gloves at each finger with left glove completely torn open on underside. Cape showing heavy wear to satin resulting in exposed inner lining, especially at scalloped edges, with signs of studio repair to several areas. Gadgets showing expected sign of wear including paint fading and soiling, and boots with heavy damage including full seam splits to zipper areas, breaches and holes throughout, and fading to the dye. For Robin, cape exhibits 1- roughly 16" seam split down the left side and signs of prior tape repair, 1- 2.75" seam split at the collar line, 1- 2.5" seam split down the right side, 1- 3.5" split at bottom left side, and 1- 10" x 3" cutout area to lower rear corner, with signs of pin wear to left breast area and areas of rear neckline and hemline residue from mounting to prior display. Exhibiting moth holes to rear seat of leggings, 1- approx. 6" breach to rear right leggings, small circular holes to tunic, soiling and studio repair work to briefs. Shoes exhibit scuffs and discoloration and appear to have been resoled. Replica Robin belt shows signs of repair to the canister components. Stewart took great pride in displaying his collection and had many custom-built mannequins in the likenesses of the characters made for his costumes. This lot includes mannequins for both characters, which are in used and well-loved condition and will require special shipping. The option is yours if you would like to receive the mannequins. Profiles in History sold an Adam West/Burt Ward pairing of Batman and Robin costume ensembles from The Azarian Collection in 2019 for $780,000, and Heritage Auctions sold another such pairing from The Comisar Collection in 2023 for $615,000. This is an opportunity to acquire what is believed to be the finest set of classic Batman and Robin costumes to ever reach the auction block.
