Description

Barbara Eden "Jeannie" Signature Season One Costume from I Dream of Jeannie (NBC-TV, 1965-70). "Jeannie" vintage original screen-worn signature harem costume worn by Barbara Eden during Season 1 of her iconic role. The three-piece costume includes: (1) a red velvet bolero-style short sleeve jacket with braided light pink trim, pink chiffon sleeves, hook-and-eye front closure, and retaining its internal, Screen Gems label handwritten, "Barbra [sic] E., New 1965", (2) a matching pair of red velvet and pink silk chiffon harem pants with elasticized cuffs, hook and eye and snap back closure, and nude silk lining, and (3) a pair of magenta silk kitten heel pumps with distinctive pointed toes, and foot opening trimmed with gold ribbon. Accompanied by (4) a ruched pink silk chiffon bralette constructed upon a bespoke nude underwire brassiere, featuring two sets of four pink tassels, pale pink braided trim, bodice reinforced with integral wire stays, lining and padding, back straps with hook and eye closure. Worn by Barbara Eden, when producers wanted the costume in Season 2 to suggest a more revealing look (hence the jacket would be seen open, revealing her bralette underneath). It retains the internal Columbia Pictures label with handwritten production number (faded). Accompanied by a (5) velvet pillbox hat with an attached pink chiffon veil and long strands of clear pink beads (possibly modified for use in another production) with the actress' name, "Barbara Eden" on a custom label perhaps made for use in origin flashback sequences of the production. The costume embodies the 1960s sexy innocence that was a hallmark of television in this era. On the heels of the success of the Bewitched sitcom and inspired by the movie, The Brass Bottle, producer Sydney Sheldon conceived of the idea for a beautiful female genie. After a protracted casting process, Barbara Eden was chosen to play the good-hearted, but naïve, supernatural conjurer. Costume designer Gwen Wakeling, a personal favorite of Cecil B. DeMille, who earned an Academy Award for her work on Samson and Delilah in 1950, was chose to create Barbara Eden's iconic "Jeannie" costumes in 1965, and the Jeannie costume continues to endure as one of the most recognizable, and most coveted amongst collectors, ever produced for the television medium. Exhibiting wear commensurate with age and production use, with light stains, fading, some velvet loss, and the shoes show darkening and general wear. Accompanied by an 8" x 10" color photograph of Barbara Eden in costume as "Jeannie" signed in blue ink. Overall the pieces remain in Very Good condition. Acquired from Ms. Debbie Reynolds.
