DescriptionAn Olivia De Havilland and Vivien Leigh Period Bonnet from "Gone With The Wind." Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer, 1939. Black silk, gathered top, distinct open back part, 'Selznick Int. Pictures Inc' label reads "Melanie / 20-108-W.W. 293;" together with its black silk chin tie; first worn by De Havilland as "Melanie Hamilton Wilkes" in the 'reading of the Confederate dead and wounded' scene then worn by Leigh as "Scarlett O'Hara" in the extended sequence where she, "Rhett Butler" [Clark Gable], and the others make their harrowing escape from a burning Atlanta; purchased at a Butterfield & Butterfield auction in Los Angeles during one of their famous Western Costume Company auctions.
Interestingly, in Margaret Mitchell's book, Scarlett takes Melanie's hat from the hall table as she and the others make their escape. David O. Selznick, being the stickler for detail he was, had the hat made and sized for De Havilland but then had Leigh use the same one for her scenes, knowing it wouldn't fit her correctly as it was not supposed to since it wasn't her hat!
