Description
A Vivien Leigh Period Blouse from "Gone With The Wind." Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer, 1939. Cotton, mauve, purple, and white floral pattern, high collar trimmed in white lace, 16 black button front closure, puffy, gathered long sleeves, same black button adornment and white lace on cuffs, numerous hidden snaps and hook-and-eye closures; the first version of this blouse (with the original lace collar and cuffs) worn by the actress as "Scarlett O'Hara" in numerous pivotal scenes including: in the church/hospital with "Melanie Hamilton Wilkes" [Olivia De Havilland] and the reminiscing soldier, when the ladies meet "Belle Watling" [Ona Munson], when she goes looking for "Dr. Meade" [Harry Davenport] among the wounded and dead, when she helps "Melanie" have her baby, when she, "Rhett Butler" [Clark Gable], and the others escape the burning of Atlanta, when she and the others make the treacherous journey back to Tara, and then at Tara when she finally gets home to find the place in shambles, ending with the climactic "As God as my witness" scene right before the intermission; Leigh would have worn many versions of this shirt as it appears in varying states of deterioration throughout each sequence, this one in particular seeming to be from the earlier scenes as its condition is still decent with only very slight tears on the right and left sleeves; purchased at a Christie's auction in London where it was purported to have been consigned directly by Suzanne Farrington [Leigh's daughter].Auction Info
