    Description

A Theda Bara Bejeweled Bustier/Front-Piece from "Cleopatra." Fox Film Corporation, 1917. Handmade, in the form of a bra-top adorned with countless faux pearls, lined with beige-colored mesh (to simulate nudity), single strap across the back to keep garment in place, further embellished with a long silver mesh panel attached to center of bra (which falls to floor) decorated with strands of faux peals, colored stones, and beads; worn by the star as she portrayed the title character in the silent film that is sadly on AFI's 'Lost Films' list; additional trivia about the film found on IMDb.com notes that it "contains the largest number of costume changes by one performer (50) in any silent film. Coincidentally, the largest number of costume changes by a single performer in any film ever was Elizabeth Taylor's 65 in the 1963 version of 'Cleopatra.'" (Please note this piece is in very fragile condition now with some 'pearls' and other beads missing as it's almost 100 years old.)

    PROVENANCE:
This piece was one of two that originally sold in the Heritage Auctions (Dallas) auction titled "Music & Entertainment Memorabilia," Sale 696, October 4-6, 2008, Lot 49208, final price realized was $8,962.50; it was originally consigned by Joan Craig who, as a young girl living in 1950s Beverly Hills, was a neighbor of and friend to Theda Bara; the aging star gave Craig a number of her film costumes, including this spectacular piece; included with a LOP signed by Craig in 2008.
