A Sentimental Personal Jacket, Circa 1970s. Brown leather, three button front closure, two small welt breast pockets, two lower pockets now removed, removeable collar, sheepskin lining, unusual black ink stamps on back of collar and coat; in heavily used and worn condition with some areas showing specific repair work.

"When I first got to New York, I didn't have much money or a place to live. First thing I did was buy this coat which was an old 1935 Afghan army jacket. I spent many nights sleeping in that jacket while at Port Authority Bus Station, Central Park, in front of the Post Office, you name it. A couple of times I got attacked by stray dogs -- that's why there are holes in the side of the sleeve that were later patched up. The buttons eventually fell off and I replaced them with elk horns that I found discarded in a trash can. This coat is the only thing I brought with me from New York to California when I was writing Rocky so it's been with me a long time. It's kinda like having a friend that went on a long journey with you. There's a lot of history in that coat. Maybe it'll bring someone else luck, too."
