    Description

A Sean Penn Whimsical Period Costume from the Woody Allen Film "Sweet and Lowdown." Sweetland Films, 1999. A full ensemble including: 1) a purple velvet blazer, peaked lapels, double-breasted, three frontal pockets, adorned with rhinestones and sequins in the form of constellations plus one crescent moon form on the right lapel, inside pocket has handwritten annotation in black felt-tip ink reading "Emmet;" 2) a white cotton tuxedo shirt, label reads "Paul Chang / Custom Tailor / Chicago / Emmet;" 3) a gray satin bowtie, 4) a pair of tan cotton pants, flat front, cuffed hems; and 5) one pair of red cotton socks; worn by the actor as "Emmet Ray" in the funny/pathetic scene when he tries to perform onstage inside a crescent-shaped moon but has a number of problems; interestingly, Penn was nominated for a 'Best Actor in a Leading Role' Oscar for his work in this film but he lost out to Kevin Spacey for "American Beauty;" additionally, Penn wears this costume on the one-sheet film poster.

Heritage sold another one of these costumes in our December 6, 2014 Entertainment & Music auction; please note this is a different one as Penn would have worn two or more throughout the production.
